In this example, we will use simple math to calculate the percentage (%) of said cases of an illness in an entire state. We use Maine as an example.

It is said that there are 537 people are infected in Maine which is said to have 1,300,000 as a total population. So we divide (or use the fraction) 537/1300000 and get 0.000413. To make that a percentage (%) number we move the decimal place 2 spots and we have .0413% of people in Maine having been infected with this illness. Obviously, this is a very small percentage. You pay a much higher interest rate on your mortgage and credit cards.

For reference terms, if 1 in 10 people have a sickness that means 10% of that given population are sick. If 10 out of 100 people have a sickness it would be the same percentage (10%).
