Government gives councils £1.6bn and orders parks and cemeteries to remain open

Government gives councils £1.6bn and orders parks and cemeteries to remain open Councils across England will receive another £1.6 billion in additional funding as they continue to respond to the coronavirus pandemic, Robert Jenrick has announced.

This funding takes the amount to support councils to respond to the pandemic to over £3.2 billion, he added.

The Communities Secretary also said all parks should remain open to benefit those with limited living space.

"I've made it clear to councils that all parks must remain open. For the health of the nation people should be able to enjoy, safely, fresh air and green space and for the health of the nation people must abide by social distancing rules and not congregate in groups in those parks."

Mr Jenrick said guidance will be published addressing reports that family members have not been able to attend funerals of loved ones due to the coronavirus.

He says funerals must remain open and has advised councils that cemeteries and graveyards must also be accessible to the public.

"These are small steps, but small mercies can make a difference... Local councils at their best can help to make life, even in times like these, more liveable and humane.”
