"Nation" refers to the people of any given country. The word also means the idea that people have of their country and their membership in it. "State" means the government of the country and also the territory any given nation-state inhabits and controls. The book proposes that four historical properties of the nation-state must evolve for the nation-state as a political institution to survive forces of globalization.
