Belief: The Possession of Janet Moses New Zealand 89 mins
“I was unable to turn away ... a powerful documentary that sensitively communicates its story.” – Critic.co.nz
In 2007, Janet Moses’ family formed a circle around her and held a vigil for four days and nights, pouring water into her eyes and down her throat, in a traditional method for expelling a Maori curse. Far from being malicious, their actions – which led to her death – were motivated by an unfailing spiritual belief.
Filmmaker David Stubbs exercises supreme sensitivity in recalling these events, interspersing the testimonies of key onlookers and experts with dramatisation of the exorcism. Rather than pointing fingers, Belief lifts the veil on what could otherwise appear to be a cruel, callous crime; and at its heart, it is essentially a love story.
